ABOUT LEANTPS™

Developing people who can understand, apply, and improve the system

LeanTPS™ teaches the Toyota Production System as an integrated management system, connecting people, operating conditions, leadership, and continuous improvement.

Our purpose is to develop practical capability through structured learning that connects understanding with workplace application. The LeanTPS™ Digital Academy brings that approach into a learning system for individuals and organizations.

OUR PURPOSE

Make the relationships understandable and the learning practical

Practices such as 5S, Visual Management, Standardized Work, and Kaizen each serve a purpose. Their value depends on how they connect with the work, the people performing it, and the leadership responsibilities that support the operating system.

LeanTPS™ helps participants examine those relationships. Learning explains why a practice exists, the conditions it depends on, and how it contributes to the complete Toyota Production System.

Our education connects principles with observation, analysis, practical exercises, and workplace application. Participants develop the ability to explain their decisions, apply appropriate methods, and verify what changes in the process.

Our purpose is to develop people who can understand, apply, sustain, and continuously improve the Toyota Production System as an integrated management system.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Four connected themes guide our teaching

LeanTPS™ brings Respect for People, Continuous Improvement, Standardized Work, and Leadership Governance into a shared understanding of how organizations develop capability and support daily work.

Respect for People

Developing people is part of improving the work. Leaders support capability through clear expectations, effective coaching, meaningful participation, and opportunities to learn. People need the conditions and support required to perform the work successfully.

Continuous Improvement

Improvement begins with understanding the current condition. Observation, investigation, experimentation, and verification help people learn what changes the process. Verified improvements are reflected in the standard and provide the reference for further learning.

Standardized Work

Standardized Work connects Takt Time, Standardized Work Sequence, and Standard Work-In-Process to establish a defined operating condition. The standard provides a reference for identifying abnormalities, supporting instruction, and verifying improvement.

Leadership Governance

Leaders confirm operating conditions, respond to abnormalities, support problem solving, and develop people. Routine confirmation and follow-up help maintain the relationship between the standard, actual work, and continued improvement.

What you can expect from LeanTPS™ learning

Our curriculum connects each topic with the operating system it supports. Participants examine the purpose of the method, the conditions in which it applies, and the evidence needed to judge its use.

Connected explanations

Understand how principles, work methods, daily management, and leadership responsibilities support one another. Each topic builds a foundation for the next.

Practical application

Use exercises, observation, analysis, and workplace activity to connect learning with actual operating conditions. Develop the ability to select and apply methods with a clear purpose.

Evidence of capability

Explain your reasoning, examine results, and identify what is needed to sustain the process. In the Practitioner Program, certification depends on reviewed evidence against program requirements.

OUR LEARNING APPROACH

Build understanding before expecting application

Capability develops through a progression of learning and practice. LeanTPS™ structures that progression around five connected stages.

  1. Knowledge

Learn the core concepts, terminology, principles, and operating methods of the Toyota Production System.

  2. Understanding

Examine why each practice exists, how it interacts with other parts of the system, and the operating conditions it helps establish.

  3. Capability

Strengthen understanding through structured exercises, observation, calculations, analysis, and reflection. Practise applying the methods and explaining the reasoning behind your decisions.

  4. Application

Transfer learning to a real workplace process. Document the current condition, apply relevant methods, and develop evidence of the results.

  5. Continuous Improvement

Continue learning through observation, problem solving, verification, and standardization. Use the verified operating condition as the starting point for the next improvement.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

David Devoe

LeanTPS™ was developed by David Devoe to bring practical Toyota Production System experience into a structured learning system.

David has more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing, operations, quality, and continuous improvement. His career includes leadership roles in operations, quality management, ISO management systems, and enterprise continuous improvement.

During his time with Toyota BT Raymond Material Handling Canada, David received formal Toyota Production System education and participated in TPS development activities. His training included three months of intensive Kaizen learning at Toyota Industries Corporation’s Takahama Plant in Japan.

David also participated in Toyota Material Handling Manufacturing North America Jishuken and cross-functional improvement initiatives, applying Toyota principles within production environments.

Throughout his career, David has led operational improvement initiatives, developed management systems, coached leaders, implemented Standardized Work, and supported organizations in developing continuous improvement capability.

LeanTPS™ brings that experience into teaching that connects principles, operating conditions, leadership responsibilities, and practical application.

WHO LEANTPS™ SERVES

People responsible for improving how work is performed

LeanTPS™ supports individuals and organizations seeking a deeper understanding of the Toyota Production System and the capability to apply its principles within their own operating environments.

The learning is relevant to supervisors, team leaders, operations managers, quality professionals, engineers, continuous improvement practitioners, trainers, and facilitators.

Manufacturing

Examine process stability, work sequence, production flow, leadership responsibilities, and the conditions that support safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.

Healthcare

Study the flow and coordination of work, process variation, and the role of standardization and problem solving in supporting service improvement.

Construction

Explore work planning, coordination, consistent operating practices, and leadership follow-up within complex project environments.

Government & Public Services

Examine service processes, visual management, structured problem solving, and the leadership practices needed to support improvement.

Distribution & Logistics

Study operational flow, material and inventory conditions, process variation, and the relationship between daily work and customer demand.

Service Organizations

Apply observation and process analysis to administrative work, customer service, knowledge work, and business operations.

Practical application starts with understanding the specific work and its operating conditions. Participants learn to examine those conditions before selecting methods or making changes.
